Navigating the Tides: Urban Transformations in the Arab World
W Doha Hotel & Residences, Doha, Qatar
May 5 – 7, 2013
This second Yale Arab Alumni Association (YAAA) conference examined how culture, history, memory and educational opportunities have shaped and continue to shape the development of cities and communities in the region. It also examined the social transformations in different Arab cities resulting from regional and rural migration, the relationship between urban planning and civic engagement, and competing definitions of “sustainability” in urban contexts in the region.
The conference addressed some of the most pressing questions facing Arab cities today: How has urban planning in the region accounted for cultural heritage? What strategies can be adopted for managing the impact of rural migration to diverse Arab cities? How have governments responded to urban challenges and with what results? How have some cities in the region sought to reconfigure themselves as cultural and “knowledge hubs” in which education plays a central role in the development of the city itself?
